Spool Gun — What It Is and Why It Matters

Part of The Welder's Lexicon · Equipment

A spool gun is a specialized MIG gun with a small wire spool (typically 1 pound) mounted directly at the gun body, keeping the wire feed path to just a few inches. This design eliminates the bird-nesting and feeding problems that occur when pushing soft aluminum wire through a standard 10-15 foot MIG gun cable.

Spool guns are the most common and affordable solution for MIG welding aluminum on machines designed primarily for steel. Most major MIG welder brands offer a spool gun accessory that plugs into a dedicated spool gun receptacle on the machine.

The drawbacks are the added weight and bulk of the gun (the spool and motor are right in your hand), the small spool capacity (1 pound runs out quickly on larger projects), and the higher cost compared to a standard MIG gun. For frequent aluminum work, a push-pull gun system is a more ergonomic alternative, but at significantly higher cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a spool gun to MIG weld aluminum?

For most hobby and light shop applications, yes — a spool gun is the most reliable way to feed soft aluminum wire without jamming. It is possible to feed aluminum through a standard gun by using a Teflon liner, U-groove drive rolls, and keeping the cable straight, but results are inconsistent over longer cable lengths.

How much does a spool gun cost?

Spool guns from major brands (Lincoln, Miller, Hobart) typically range from around the price of a few tanks of gas up to several hundred dollars depending on amperage rating and features. Given that they open up aluminum capability on your existing MIG welder, they represent excellent value for shops that occasionally weld aluminum.
