Electrical Power Requirements

Before buying a welder, verify what your electrical panel can support. This is the most common oversight new home welders make — buying a 220V machine before confirming they have a 220V circuit available.

110V / 120V (Standard Household Outlets)

Standard 15A or 20A household circuits support small MIG welders (up to 140A output), small stick welders, and entry-level plasma cutters. You get limited amperage and duty cycle on 120V, but it is enough for light sheet metal, thin plate, and learning. A dedicated 20A circuit (not shared with other loads) is strongly recommended — welders pull significant current on startup.

220V / 240V (Dryer or Range Outlet)

Full-size welders and plasma cutters run on 220V circuits. If your garage has an electric dryer outlet (NEMA 14-30 or 6-50), you can plug in most home welders. If not, an electrician can run a dedicated 220V/50A circuit from your panel — typically a few hundred dollars depending on distance and local codes. This is the single best investment for a home welding shop.

Ventilation & Fume Management

Welding in an enclosed garage without ventilation is a significant health risk. Welding fumes contain metal oxides, carbon monoxide, ozone, and particulates that cause both acute symptoms (headache, nausea) and long-term damage (respiratory disease, neurological effects).

Regardless of ventilation setup, wear a respirator with P100 filters whenever welding.
