Plasma Cutter vs. Angle Grinder for Cutting Metal
This comparison gets framed as a choice, which it mostly is not. Nearly every shop that owns a plasma cutter also owns two or three angle grinders and uses them more often. The real question is not which tool cuts metal better — the plasma cutter does, clearly — but whether the amount of cutting you actually do justifies a machine that needs a circuit, an air supply and a consumables budget to do one job well.
What each tool actually does
An angle grinder is a high-speed rotary tool that accepts a range of discs. With a thin cut-off wheel it cuts by abrasion — grinding a kerf through the material. Swap the disc and the same tool grinds, deburrs, cleans rust and scale, prepares weld joints, removes spatter, and sands or polishes. It is the most general-purpose tool in a metalworking shop by a wide margin.
A plasma cutter forces compressed air through a constricted arc, creating an extremely hot ionised jet that melts the metal and blows the molten material out of the kerf. It cuts conductive metal quickly, in any direction, with a narrow kerf and minimal heat spread compared to the alternatives. It does one thing, and it does it far better than the grinder does.

The hidden cost of plasma
The machine price is the visible number. What catches buyers out is everything around it, and the air supply is the biggest item. A plasma cutter needs air at a specified pressure and, critically, a sustained flow rate. A small hobby compressor may reach the pressure and be unable to hold the flow, at which point the cutter performs badly, produces a poor edge and burns through consumables.
- Compressor capacity must meet the cutter's stated flow requirement continuously, not momentarily. Check both the pressure and the flow figures.

It also wins on universality. No compressor, no dedicated circuit, no air line, no conductivity requirement. It works on a job site, in a field, at the far end of an extension cord. Which to buy, and in what order
Buy the angle grinder first. This is not close. It costs a fraction as much, needs nothing but an outlet, and does a dozen jobs the plasma cutter cannot. If you own exactly one metalworking power tool, it should be this one — and a second one kept set up with a different disc saves more time than most upgrades.
Add plasma when cutting volume justifies it. The trigger is not project ambition but repetition: when you are regularly cutting sheet or plate, when curves and shapes are part of the work, or when the time spent cutting with abrasive discs has become the bottleneck in your projects. At that point the speed and edge quality are transformative rather than merely nicer.

The framing that helps most: the grinder is infrastructure and the plasma cutter is a specialist.
