Welding Positions Explained

Flat (1G/1F) welding lets gravity hold the puddle in the joint. Out-of-position welding — vertical and overhead — fights gravity. The molten weld pool wants to drip, sag, or fall out of the joint entirely. Success requires lower heat input, faster technique, and understanding how to use gravity rather than fighting it.

Welding position designations: 1G/1F = flat, 2G/2F = horizontal, 3G/3F = vertical, 4G/4F = overhead. The "G" designates groove welds, "F" designates fillet welds. Certification tests specify positions — a welder certified in 3G and 4G is qualified to weld in all positions.

Vertical Up (3G)

Vertical up is the standard for structural and code work. You weld from bottom to top, advancing the arc upward against gravity. The solidified metal below supports the puddle above.

Stick Welding Vertical Up

Use a weave pattern — a slight side-to-side motion that builds a shelf on each side of the joint. The most common pattern is a triangle or Z-weave: advance to one side, pause to let the puddle build, sweep across to the other side, pause again, then advance upward. The pauses at each side are critical — they let the puddle solidify enough to support the next pass. Reduce amperage 10–15% from your flat welding settings. Use E7018 or E6013 electrodes — they produce a thick, supportive slag blanket that helps hold the puddle.

MIG Welding Vertical Up

Use a triangle weave or steady upward progression. Reduce wire feed speed and voltage from flat settings — a slightly cooler puddle stays in place better. Keep the gun angle pointing slightly upward (10–15 degrees) into the joint. If using short-circuit transfer, the crackling rhythm helps control heat — each short-circuit cools the puddle momentarily. Pulse MIG is excellent for vertical work because it alternates between high and low heat automatically.

TIG Welding Vertical Up

Reduce amperage 15–20% from flat settings. Use a smaller puddle — only melt enough base metal to achieve fusion. Dip the filler rod at the bottom of the puddle and advance upward in small, controlled steps. The puddle must be small enough that gravity does not pull it downward. A foot pedal is extremely helpful for real-time heat control.

Vertical Down

Vertical down is faster than vertical up but produces shallower penetration. It is acceptable for sheet metal, non-structural joints, and situations where speed matters more than strength. Travel downward, letting gravity pull the puddle along. Use higher travel speeds to keep the puddle thin and prevent it from running ahead of the arc.

⚠️ Safety Warning: Most welding codes do not accept vertical-down welds for structural applications because of reduced penetration. Use vertical up for anything load-bearing. Vertical down is appropriate for cosmetic welds, sheet metal, and non-critical joints only.

Overhead (4G)

Overhead welding is the most challenging position. The weld pool is directly above you, held in place only by surface tension and arc force. Any excess heat causes the puddle to drip — directly onto you.

Settings Adjustments by Position
